With the busyness of the season, it’s quite a challenge to keep focus on the real reason for the season. But we must always remind ourselves and our kids most specially, that Christmas is not all about gifts, Santa Claus, food and parties. That it is not all about what they want to receive, but what “gift” they can give to Jesus for his birthday. That the “real” Christmas starts in their hearts and actually can happen every day of the year.
This poem by Howard Thurman, made into one of my favorite Christmas songs by the Jesuit Music Ministry, is always part of my Christmas playlist:
When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry Free the prisoners, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among brothers, To make music in the heart.
Let’s all keep doing the work of Christmas in and out of our homes. Have a meaningful holiday season!
