Pledge for Hope!

Did you know that cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide, with 500,000 new cases and 250,000 deaths reported each year. Over 80% of cases occur in developing countries including the Philippines, where it is ranked as the second most common cancer afflicting Filipino women.

On May 24, Sunday, The Tour of Hope 2009, a cycling event which aims to raise awareness on cervical cancer and raise funds for screening of underprivileged women, kicks off in Muntinlupa City.  Tour of Hope is held all over the world and is now on its second year in the Philippines. This year’s tour will cover approximately 500 kilometers spreading the cervical cancer advocacy throughout Southern Luzon as it culminates in Camarines Sur on May 28.

More than 60 core bikers, including David Charlton and  Joyette Jopson of Team David’s Salon, Jeena Lopez, Tessa Prieto-Valdes,

Tessa Prieto-Valdes, TTOH biker

Veron Medina, Lara Villafuerte have signed up for this 5-day tour.  Senator Pia Cayetano has also graciously accepted the invitation to join the kick off and first leg.

You too can help!  Support cervical cancer awareness projects and screenings across the Philippines by donating any amount to the cause or by pledging an amount for every kilometer completed by any Tour of Hope biker.  Download the pledge form here and fax it back to 7138144.

Certainly, anything we can do to make women aware about this disease, about how getting their annual pap smears is important, and how now we can be protected from it, is worth the time and effort.  Of course, let us also not forget our own health! :-)

This advocacy event is a joint project of Bravehearts, CECAP, CIF (Cancer Inst. Foundation Inc) supported by GlaxoSmithKline Philippines, Campaigns PR Inc., Team David’s Salon, Gold’s Gym, Crocs, Maldita,, Gatorade, Wings Photography Inc., Personifi, Philam Life Insurance, Destiny Cable, Metro Magazine, Action and Fitness Magazine, Health Today, Manila Bulletin, Business World, Mabolo Flowers, Nikon, and Creative Juice.
