A high school senior at the PAREF Woodrose School for Girls, Luisa is a shining example of the kind of students that this institution has been producing for the past 35 years.

Apart from the school’s commitment to academic excellence and character development, one other aspect that differentiates Woodrose from all other schools in the country is its mentoring system.

Every student at Woodrose is assigned an adult mentor, who guides her social, emotional, and spiritual formation. Every week or so, the student would meet with her mentor and discuss issues that concern her. It could be anything: her grades, her crushes, her friends, her home life. The mentor listens and tries to help the student make sense of what is happening to her. All conversations are kept in confidence.

Elinor Diokno, coordinator for personal formation for the grade school department, has been a mentor for the past 16 years. The primary role of the mentor, she says, is to give these young girls proper guidance. She explains, “We don’t tell them what to do. We give them criteria as to how they can decide for themselves.”

This setup, says Luisa, has helped her a lot. She says, “Having an adult in your life other than your parents gives another perspective on what a student is dealing with whether it’s career choices or boys. But it depends on you: what you give on your mentoring is what you will receive.”

Leah Puyat, a Woodrose alumna, totally agrees. A magazine editor and social entrepreneur, Leah says, “All the good things I’ve done in my life is the fruit of my Woodrose education. My mentor, she gave me real practical tips. I’m 42, and I can still remember what she told me… There was always someone talking to me.”

The program has not only helped Leah grow as a person, she says, it also boosted her self-esteem, making her more confident of every decision she makes.

Leah says, “’You have worth.’ That’s the best thing that mentoring does.”
