The Birth of a Mompreneur

“When a child is born, so is a mother.”

Whoever said these words should have also said, “When a child is born, so is a mompreneur.”  Because when a woman becomes a mother, her life undergoes a sudden yet magical transformation, a fertile ground for new endeavors, one of which could be a new business.

With motherhood comes a rebirth of the imagination and a wealth of new ideas.

When I gave birth to my firstborn, Coby, I remember having a new business idea at every stage of his life.  I wanted to …After having so much fun organizing his 1st birthday party, I was contemplating setting up a party company.  As I dealt with having to breastfeed in public, then I wanted to go into launching my own brand of breastfeeding apparel.  (And this was actually the birth of Mommy Matters!)

Being with our children everyday also keeps us in touch with our youth and this makes our imagination and creativity soar.

Whether it be those colorful books or cartoons we are suddenly exposed to again, or because we have to be creative to keep our child happy and entertained, we ourselves “become children” again somehow, and this opens us up to new …

Motherhood comes with a million and one tasks and responsibilities.  We can call motherhood a lifetime enrolment into a needs assessment workshop or a automatically applied feasibility study.

From pregnancy to caring for a newborn to parenting a toddler till childhood.  Every stage is a challenge and they say there is a product or service out there to aid us in every task and step.  Then again, there isn’t.  And that idea could very well be the next big invention after diapers.

Questions: Whom else would have thought a piece of fabric could be a baby sling and spur off a whole new baby wearing lifestyle? Whom else would have had the astuteness to study if classical music (hint: Baby Einstein) had an positive effect on the cognitive development of babies?

Answer: A) Scientists in a lab? WRONG. B) Product development specialists in their office cubicles?  WRONG AGAIN. C) Real moms? CORRECT!

When this beautiful new person comes into our lives, some of us are faced with that innate desire to drop everything for him.

Super successful career woman one minute, super mom the next.  I’ve met some women who have climbed the corporate ladder, consider their careers as their lives, and aim to be CEO of the multinational they work for. Then as soon as they set their eyes on their little bundle of joy, they make a radical life choice (mental, or not), and decide to drop their career and become a SAHM (stay at home mom) or a WAHM (work at home mom) so they can spend time with their child.

Many mompreneurs were born this way, with moms choosing to have that flexibility of being with their kids specially in their early years.  In leaving her job, it is either inspiration that prods them into setting up a business, and it could also be economics, with her having to support her husband’s income even while staying home.

Moms make natural entrepreneurs.

Mothers are creative, resourceful, resilient, self-motivated. natural networkers and marketers, expert multi-taskers and have good time management, budgeting and people management skills.  Read any business book and see that these same characteristics are what makes for a successful businessman.

A mompreneur creates and runs her business usually with a delicate balance of heart and mind, but always with a lot of passion.  It is her passion for motherhood and for her children that makes a mom inspired enough to create (product development).  It is this same passion that motivates her to go for her goals and dreams. (business set up).  It is still the same passio that makes a mother want to share her discovery with others (sales and marketing).  It is her passion that drives her to succeed.
